Thursday’s visit follows an invitation from Chinese leader Xi Jinping, state news agency Sana reported on Tuesday. Al-Assad is accompanied, among others, by his Minister of Foreign Affairs Faisal al-Mikdad and Minister of Economy Muhammad Samir Al-Khalil. It is the first visit in almost twenty years: the Syrian ruler was last in China in 2004.
China also recently mediated between the two regional powers Iran and Saudi Arabia, pushing for the resumption of diplomatic ties between the two. China had quietly achieved rapprochement between the two rivals – a major diplomatic success for the country.
The conflict in Syria began in the spring of 2011 with protests against Assad’s government. The government has taken violent action against this. There is no political solution to the conflict in sight. The government now controls two-thirds of the country again. Since the start of the uprising, China, along with Iran and Russia, has supported the Syrian government. (SDA)
