National elections and elections for the Council of States in Valais: will the center defend its bastion?

Since 1857, the Center (formerly CVP) has occupied the two seats in the Valais Council of States. Currently with Beat Rieder and Marianne Maret.

In Valais the center is a power. In the last General Council elections, their voter share was almost 40 percent. In the National Council it occupies three of the eight seats and the two seats of the Valais Council of States are firmly in Mitte hands – and have been so since 1857.

Whether that remains the case remains to be seen. Nine people run for Stöckli. Centerman Beat Rieder (60) can safely defend his seat. However, things will probably get tighter for center woman Marianne Maret (65). Four years ago she narrowly won against the current SP state councilor Mathias Reynard (36). This time its FDP national councilor Philippe Nantermod (39) could be dangerous.

New election procedure

A new election procedure creates uncertainties. Instead of party lists, there is now one ballot paper with the names of all candidates, on which a maximum of two names can be ticked. However, Maret, the very first councilor of Valais, can count on the previous bonus this time and must therefore be re-elected in the second voting round at the latest.

There is a curse on the Greens: will they break it now?

As for the National Council, the distribution of seats will likely remain the same with three mandates for the center, two for the SVP and one each for the FDP, SP and the Greens. However, for some current members, things may be getting tight within the party.
