The introduction of alternative propulsions is planned in the Energy and Climate Action Plan of the Ministry of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDBS). The DDBS wants, among other things, to reduce CO2 emissions by at least 40 percent in 2030 compared to 2001.
In addition to the two trucks, the army’s logistics base will receive about 70 more electric cars from the fall, as Armasuisse announced on Thursday. The electric trucks come from the manufacturers Volvo and Mercedes.
In the first test phase until autumn 2024, Armasuisse will test the suitability in extreme situations and safety aspects in driving school activities and professional staff. The Federal Office also compares economic efficiency with that of fossil propulsion.
The second testing phase focuses on life cycle costs and infrastructure implications. Daily use should make it possible to draw conclusions about mileage, maintenance sensitivity and maintenance that is comparable to the civilian environment. The tests will last until the end of 2025.
