Switzerland is celebrating its birthday – and the SVP is ashamed. On Tuesday, Federal Bern celebrated the 175th anniversary of the Federal Constitution, marking the birth of Switzerland as we know it today. Members of Parliament, all federal councilors and guests from abroad took part in the official ceremony in the afternoon, before the celebration for the general population took place in the evening.

Sounds like a dry affair. But the ceremony left emotions running high – not in a good way. The SVP was so annoyed by the program that she sent out a spicy communiqué that same afternoon.

“Embarrassing performance at climate glue level”

“What happened today at the Federal Palace was an embarrassing achievement in climate glue instead of a worthy celebration of the anniversary of the Federal Constitution,” it said. As elected representatives of the people, one could only feel ashamed of this. The party is particularly annoyed by the “stupid clichés about French-speaking Switzerland” and the “damage to the national anthem”. SVP faction leader Thomas Aeschi (44) had previously commented on the latter.

Comedian Joachim Rittmeyer (72) rewrote the Swiss psalm – and sang it while playing a large xylophone – instead of the sunrise and sea of rays of ‘Fifa tax 0 percent’ or ’30 farmers in parliament’. In addition, two clowns acted as presenters of the program, one of whom dressed as a woman.

Where are the women?

Judging from the slightly embarrassed looks of some attendees, the humorists, and not just the SVP representatives, found the humorists’ performances moderately funny at best. The FIFA swipe certainly caused laughter in the room.

However, in the leftist camp and among the women, there was something else that was disturbing. Apart from President of the Council of States Brigitte Häberli-Koller (65), only men occupied the lectern during the official ceremony. “The women were only good for entertainment,” said a Green National Councilor afterwards, shaking his head. Apparently not much has changed in this regard in the 175 years since the Federal Constitution was adopted.

We can only hope that the public celebration will be better received by the general public. (lha)
