Baudet probably suspended, “there are no rules for nothing”

The chairman of the Forum for Democracy, Baudet, is expected to be suspended for seven working days. MPs will vote tomorrow on a proposal to bar Baudet from House sessions for seven days for failing to comply with rules on extra positions and extra revenue. A tour of the NOS shows that a majority of the parties support the suspension.

The parties D66, PvdA, ChristenUnie, Party for the Animals, GroenLinks, JA21, Den Haan and Gündoğan certainly support the suspension. According to insiders, this also applies to VVD and CDA, but that will only be discussed in the parliamentary groups tomorrow.

The suspension is a proposal from the committee that monitors MPs’ integrity. According to the Integrity Investigation Board, Baudet violated the Chamber’s code of conduct by not registering his board membership of a limited liability company on the outside employment register. The college believes he should still do so. It is the Amsterdam Media Group BV, which among other things runs a publishing house.

Unique

If the suspension continues, Baudet will no longer be able to meet and only vote. That would be unique. MEPs have already been banned from taking part in a debate. That’s what happened to Baudet himself during the General Political Reflections last month, after he called a lecture at Oxford, where Minister Kaag had studied “a training institute for Western intelligence”.

MP Den Haan says a seven-day suspension “doesn’t matter much” but “sends a signal”. She calls transparency about additional earnings of great importance. “No MP should be exempt from this.” JA21 boss Eerdmans also supports the suspension: “The House of Representatives cannot accept such behavior. These rules have a reason.”

silenced

Forum for Democracy previously spoke of “a new step to silence the opposition”. According to the party, it is “absurd that the coalition wants to suspend opposition MPs on the basis of tricky and bureaucratic rules,” thereby labeling “undesirable votes as not having integrity.” The party emphasizes that Baudet’s additional positions are freely accessible through the Chamber of Commerce.

Geert Wilders, leader of the largest opposition party PVV, is firmly against the suspension:
