The federal government advises seniors over the age of 65 and people with previous illnesses to be vaccinated against the coronavirus again.

People who are at extra risk should be vaccinated against the coronavirus this fall. This is what the Federal Office of Public Health (BAG) and the Federal Commission for Vaccination Issues (Ekif) recommend.

The coronavirus continues to circulate and can cause serious illness in particularly vulnerable groups of people, the two authorities noted in their vaccination advice from Monday. The starting situation has changed compared to the pandemic years 2020 and 2021.

No vaccination advice for people under 65 years of age

For people under 65 without health risk factors, there is a “very low risk of serious illness.” There is no vaccination advice for them. However, vaccination is possible on request for a fee.

Groups of people who are at extra risk, on the other hand, have a significantly increased risk of a serious course of the disease. The vaccination offers them good protection against serious diseases. Therefore, get vaccinated in the autumn, ideally between mid-October and December. The health insurer will reimburse the costs.

According to BAG and Ekif, people over 65 years of age, people over 16 years of age with previous diseases or trisomy 21 and pregnant women with previous diseases should be vaccinated with a single dose of a vaccine adapted to the XBB.1.5 variant. Health authorities advise other pregnant women to be vaccinated if the treating specialist recommends this.

New variants in circulation

The coronaviruses currently in circulation have new mutations that allow them to bypass acquired immunity. In addition, vaccination protection or protection against an infection decreases the longer it lasts. The modified mRNA vaccine should also be effective against the new variants.
