They sponsor everything: does the customer pay for advertising for the electricity barons?

The Basel bidder Primeo Energie sponsors the Tour de Suisse.

It’s a price hammer: Mr and Mrs Swiss will have to pay an average of about 18 percent more for electricity in the coming year. Consumers have no choice. As a private consumer, you must obtain these from the local provider.

It is all the more surprising that the network operators are ubiquitous in the public – and spend a lot of money on it. For example, they sponsor major sporting and cultural events. Basel-based Primeo Energie is the main sponsor of the Tour de Suisse, the Zurich EWZ logo appears on the trousers and kneepads of the ZSC Lions, and the Lucerne EWL supports a wide variety of cultural events.

Why do the energy suppliers advertise – while their customers have no choice? Could you do without the advertising and lower the prices instead? This is what Blick users are wondering.

It’s not that easy. The customers in the basic offer would not receive higher electricity prices due to the advertising, says Primeo spokesman Joachim Krebs on Blick. That should not be: “According to legal requirements, the sponsorship costs are not included in the electricity tariffs for the basic supply.”

Health insurance, rent, electricity: you can do this to absorb cost shocks

Elcom checks the rates carefully

In fact, the law regulates exactly how the electricity price is composed. Besides a charge for network use, charges to the community and the network surcharge, electricity tariffs are the highest item.

The network operators must submit these tariffs to Elcom, which then checks and approves them. If the price increase is unjustified, Elcom can prohibit it or reduce prices that are too high afterwards. If you feel that your electricity bill is too high, you can contact Elcom yourself.

But why does a primary care provider need advertising at all? After all, ordinary Swiss citizens cannot switch electricity suppliers. “Advertising is primarily intended for the products and services on the market and not for the basic service.” Primeo Energie is also active in the field of e-mobility, local heat supply and renewable energy. “To survive in this free market, we build the brand in Switzerland.” (brother)
