For more sustainability: federal government launches new climate strategy for agriculture

class=”sc-29f61514-0 icZBHN”>

Thanks to a new federal climate strategy for agriculture, the Swiss food system should be made more sustainable and food security strengthened. (archive image)

The strategy includes measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from agriculture on the one hand and measures to adapt agriculture to the impact of climate change on the other, as announced by the Federal Bureau of Agriculture (FOAG) on Tuesday.

In concrete terms, agriculture should produce ‘climate- and location-adapted’ and thus achieve a degree of self-sufficiency of at least 50 percent.

In addition, the population must eat a healthy and balanced diet. According to FOAG, the greenhouse gas footprint of food should be reduced by two-thirds by 2020.

In addition, greenhouse gas emissions from domestic agricultural production must be reduced by 40 percent compared to 1990 levels.

The new strategy replaces FOAG’s 2011 climate strategy.
