Now it is official: Member of Parliament Daniel Jositsch (58) wants to become a member of the Federal Council. He already made that clear when he succeeded Simonetta Sommaruga (63). And he makes that clear again in the battle for the seat of Alain Berset (51), who will step down at the end of this year.

He announced his candidacy at a media conference in Zurich. Jositsch said he wanted to help solve the country’s major challenges. “I have a lot of respect for this office,” he says. But he also has the will and desire to help solve the problems.

Jositsch rules out a wild candidacy

The cantonal party supports Jositsch’s candidacy. Co-chair Priska Seiler Graf (55) endorsed it in Federal Council format. He is listened to in Bern and he can help shape compromises. Co-chair Andreas Daurù (44) recalled that the dispute over the successor of the Sommaruga was not a pleasure. But at the same time he emphasized that Jositsch recognized this mistake and apologized for it.

The Zurich party leadership therefore advises to nominate him. On October 26, the SP of the Canton of Zurich will decide on the nomination during a delegation meeting. Until then, there may be other uses.

Zurich Juso etches against Jositsch

The Zurich Juso has no Federal Council interest Daniel Jositsch (58) at his side. Under the title “Dani tries again – Juso doesn’t care” the young party sent a communiqué on Tuesday.

De Juso does not think “that it plays a major role whether Jositsch or someone else from the SP would get this seat”. You are not surprised “that, despite the disgrace of the past year, Jositsch is once again applying for his dream job in executive monotony,” says Gian Lusti, co-president of Juso Kanton Zurich.

“Social Liberal, Non-Feminist and Repressive Politics”

In the government, which is dominated by right-wing citizens, it doesn’t matter which Social Democrat gets involved. “Of course we are extremely critical of the social-liberal, non-feminist and repressive policies of Daniel Jositsch,” co-chair Laura Fischer can also be quoted. “But even a consistently leftist candidacy can hardly make any real progress in this die-hard body.”

The young party had already criticized Jositsch’s candidacy last year – in particular that he had described himself as “discriminated against” after not being nominated by the party. It couldn’t be that a white, highly privileged cis man in multiple positions of power felt that he had to mention that he was being discriminated against every time he appeared in the media, the Jusos had etched it at the time. Jositsch made it clear that he would not let loose if the SP faction in Bern did not get him on the ticket. “I will only run if my parliamentary group nominates me,” says the Council of States of Zurich. “I accept my group’s decision no matter who they put on the ticket.”

Other candidates will follow

Jositsch is the second candidate to throw his hat in the ring. Basel National Councilor Mustafa Atici (53) has already officially expressed his interest.

Other potential candidates are staying in the background for now. But Atici and Jositsch will certainly not remain the only candidates. Some will step into the carousel of candidates ahead of the National Council elections on October 22, fueling their election campaign for a seat in parliament. Others wait until after the elections to be able to better explore the starting position.

SP nominated November 25

Interested parties must apply according to the SP schedule before October 29. Then it will become clear whether the Basel district president Beat Jans (59), the Bernese government councilor Evi Allemann (45) or state councilor Eva Herzog (61, BS) will also enter the race. National councilors Jon Pult (38, GR), Matthias Aebischer (55, BE) and Roger Nordmann (50, VD) are also traded as papabili.

An important provisional decision will be taken on 25 November. Then the SP faction will decide who to put on their card. This will be the most difficult hurdle for Jositsch. His ego trip to the Sommaruga successor has left its mark. The fact that he sent his invitation to the media about his candidacy on Saturday before his party announced the nomination procedure also caused a shake of the head.

Lots of support from the common people

But if he gets the SP ticket, his chances are good. “If he’s on the list, he’s chosen,” is what many ordinary people say. Jositsch enjoys a lot of good will in the centre-right camp. You’d like to see him in the state government well into the SVP.

Not only because he politicizes more on the right wing of the SP than the rest of the comrades, for example in the legal field. But also because some think that the SP should now send a man to the government again after the women’s debate. Like Zurich, the largest canton would again be represented in the Bundesrat – and above all a donor canton in financial equality. And finally, Jositsch would represent the urban areas.

However, there are also critical voices in the middle class camp. So some understand the anger of the SP that Jositsch is doing it alone in the Sommaruga successor. It is said that the Zurich resident was not loyal to his party and did not put himself in the best light. And: “People love betrayal, but not the traitor.”

The elections on December 13 will decide who will be part of the government in the Federal Council from next year.
