To protect valuable monuments: Heimatschutz defends itself against the Greens initiative

If the Greens have their way, a solar system should also be installed on existing homes.

In just 15 years, all houses in Switzerland must have a solar energy system installed. This is what the Greens’ new solar initiative calls for. Exceptions are only made if it concerns a monumental building or if the roof is not suitable for a solar system. And: to avoid hardship, the deadline could also be extended to 2050.

However, Swiss internal security remains sceptical. He has little use for the demand for mandatory sunroofs and facades. That is why he wants to work ‘vigorously’ to ensure that conservation interests are protected and that the protection of valuable monuments and townscapes is not undermined.

City centers should be unsuitable anyway

It is especially difficult to design photovoltaic systems (PV) on roofs and facades in a well-considered way, especially for listed buildings and cityscapes, he continues in a statement on Tuesday. He points out that less than 10 percent of all buildings are protected under any title.

Given the often small and fragmented roof surfaces of historic buildings, the energy transition with PV cannot be achieved. According to Heimatschutz, PV systems make a particularly relevant contribution to securing the power supply on industrial and commercial buildings with large roof areas.

Homeland Security says it supports the national energy strategy. He is committed to the goal of a climate-neutral Switzerland by 2050 and generally supports the promotion and use of alternative energies. (SDA)
