The federal government opens the webshop: You can buy the new e-vignette here

Now comes the e-vignette! From next Tuesday, August 1, the electronic vignette can be purchased through the “Via Portal” of the Federal Office of Customs and Border Security (BASG). It is then immediately valid until the end of 2023. The webshop can be reached via www.e-vignette.ch.

Only three pieces of information are required for the purchase, as the federal government reports: vehicle category, country of registration and license plate. It is not necessary to open a user account and enter information about persons – for example, who buys the vignette or drives the car. The e-vignette can be paid online.

The data is stored on a server in Switzerland and is only required for the purchase of the e-vignette and for control purposes. There is no vehicle tracking of any kind and no surveillance using GPS. After the legal retention period has expired, the data will be deleted.

One license plate change allowed

However, the “publicly visible” option can be voluntarily selected in the Via Portal. This can be used to check whether a valid e-vignette is present for an associated license plate. This is especially useful when a vehicle is used by more than one person, such as rental cars or car sharing. For additional functions, e-mail address, first and last name, address can also be voluntarily registered.

A one-off license plate change per e-vignette is also permitted, for example if a vehicle owner moves to another canton. Interested parties can optionally receive a receipt for the purchase of the e-vignette by providing their email address. It is not possible to exchange a sticker for an e-vignette.

No automated camera checks

Fleet management is made easier for owners of several vehicles who need a vignette, as a one-time registration on the federal e-portal activates an additional function for the purchase of several e-vignettes.

An e-vignette is checked at the border by employees of the BAZG and in the interior by the cantonal police on the basis of random samples of the number plates. According to the BASF, no automated checks are planned as long as the dual system exists. (sf)
