Protection not enforced enough: lawyer Peter V. Kunz advocates more rights for animals

Professor of economics Peter V. Kunz argues for more rights for animals: “The priority is the right to life.” The Bundesrat and parliament must become more active. (picture icon)

However, this should not lead to a meat ban. “I have no problem eating meat, I eat it.” In Switzerland, however, animals must have a legally enshrined right to a dignified and appropriate life, Kunz said in an interview with the “SonntagsZeitung”, “a protection of life, like in Germany”. Kunz publishes his 800-page work “Swiss Animal Law” in August.

Animals must be entitled to sufficient space and light. “And the right to veterinary care,” said the professor of commercial law and comparative law at the University of Bern. “There should be no vegetation. If someone keeps 20 cats in a one and a half room apartment, that’s not okay.” Animals could be assisted, as is the case with minors.

Animal protection is insufficiently enforced by many veterinary authorities in Switzerland. “And it only applies to vertebrates,” says Kunz. Animals have enjoyed increased legal protection for twenty years. “Nevertheless, animals are still atypical from a legal point of view, even if the civil code says otherwise. If I hit an animal and it dies, it’s not a crime of bodily harm or death, but only damage to property.”
