Should they or shouldn’t they? The situation is uncomfortable for the Greens.
Research by research institute Sotomo commissioned by SonntagsBlick shows that 70 to 30 percent of voters are in favor of an attack on the SVP seat in the Bundesrat. There is also clear sympathy among the SP voters for a green candidate for the Bundesrat. 68 percent are “for or rather for”.
However, the opposite is true for the general population. Only 32 percent of those polled think the Greens should attack the vacant seat of Finance Minister Ueli Maurer (71) – a skepticism reflected in parliament.
Alone on the ground
Balthasar Glättli (50) tried to find out how large the support would be for a green attack on the SVP seat. The result, according to the Green Chairman, was sobering: “Even the SP wouldn’t be there.” The GLP would also be against it, at least in the middle class camp. But what good is a Green candidacy if it doesn’t stand a chance from the start?
The Greens group wants to discuss this issue on Tuesday – and decide which is more important: “The important symbolism of an attack on the middle-class majority in the Bundesrat”, Glättli said, or the fact that “this time we hardly stand a chance to kraken» Glättli is convinced that the possible decision not to attack the SVP seat can also be conveyed to the voters: “That would mobilize our base all the more for the elections of 2023. If we do well next year , our chances of a seat in the Bundesrat are good.”
Good – or at least better than today.
