Ensuring food security: Switzerland hopes Russia will extend the grain deal

The Kremlin on Monday suspended a long-standing agreement on the export of Ukrainian grain across the Black Sea. It officially ended a little later on Monday evening. Since last summer, the agreement has enabled Ukraine to sell more than 30 million tons of grain by sea to other countries, despite Russia’s war of aggression.

At a rally in New York on Monday, representatives from Switzerland called for global food security, particularly with regard to the extension of the Black Sea initiative. Switzerland supports efforts by the UN Secretary-General and Turkey to reach an agreement between the parties and expand the initiative, according to a statement from the Swiss foreign ministry released on Tuesday.

At the high-level meeting chaired by British Foreign Secretary James Cleverly and in the presence of his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba, Switzerland also reaffirmed its support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. She also recalled the obligation of all parties to respect international humanitarian law.
