The Koninklijke Bibliotheek is working together with Wikimedia, the association for the promotion of free knowledge, Wikimedia announced on Tuesday. The collection started in 2023 and includes more than 125,000 items related to Switzerland. According to the association, Wikimedia expects an increase of about 5,000 Wikipedia articles per year.
The difference between the archived form of articles and the live articles on Wikipedia is that the archived article is “frozen” and is said to be unaltered in the long-term archive of the National Library. The archive is included in the Helveticat library catalog and can be consulted in e-Helvetica Access, the gateway to the digital collections of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek.
The project started at the end of 2020. The representative compilation does not pretend to be complete, according to Tuesday’s message. In addition to the text, the Koninklijke Bibliotheek will also take into account all images, graphics, audio and videos in the Wikipedia articles, the list of authors and the applicable license terms, including their metadata.
