There was a broad majority in favor of this in the base, the two current opposition parties announced in Utrecht on Monday. The election is on November 22. The Greens and Social Democrats therefore run with common candidates and a common programme. The stated aim is to prevent a right-wing populist majority in parliament.
At the green party GroenLinks, the approval of the members was 92 percent. For the social-democratic PvdA this was almost 88 percent. The social-democratic Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans is considered a possible joint top candidate. Both parties already work together in a parliamentary group in the first chamber of parliament – similar to the Bundesrat. The House of Representatives will then be central on 22 November.
The previous center-right government of right-liberal Prime Minister Mark Rutte recently collapsed in a conflict over asylum policy. All top men of the four previous coalition partners have now announced their departure from politics – including Rutte himself, who was head of government for almost 13 years.
