As of today, the world’s largest fire simulator is located in Switzerland. He is stationed in Payerne in the canton of Vaud. There the airport fire brigade will use it for training. This was announced by the Federal Public Service Defence, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS) on Friday at the opening.
Fire departments can practice with up to four vehicles in the simulator. The center includes fire simulators for combat aircraft, helicopters and transport aircraft. Three other simulators are intended for fires in workshops or aircraft hangars. In addition, there is a central building with theory rooms, cloakrooms and technical facilities.
«Phénix» mainly uses the professional and militia personnel of the military airfields. The center is also open to civilian fire departments.
The simulators run on propane gas. Instead of extinguishing agents, only water is used. The system reuses this so that it is available for further extinguishing exercises.
The old training facilities at the airports in question no longer met the requirements and would have to be renewed, it was said. For cost reasons and to exploit synergies, it was decided in 2010 to build the new center in Payerne. The military airfield there is the main deployment and training site for the Swiss Air Force and Air Defense. The new building cost 28 million francs. (SDA/rba)
