Hackers exploited a vulnerability on a company’s servers that contained federal data. Millions of files are likely to be affected.

For the federal government, the hacker attack becomes a total fiasco! Millions of pieces of data have been stolen. An overview is still missing.

It has just become known that years old information from the hooligan database has also appeared on the dark web – data that should have been deleted long ago. And now it is suddenly very uncomfortable again for hundreds of those affected.

We are all left in awe. The federal government is currently gambling away the last bit of confidence in its handling of highly sensitive citizens’ data.

The distrust is already great. This was evident from the vote in March 2021, when the idea of an electronic ID was brushed aside.

When the Federal Council announced in March that it would vote again, the Audit Committee of the National Council (GPK) sounded the alarm. Finally, a pilot project had to be shut down due to glaring security gaps.

How is the public supposed to believe that their own data is safe with the federal government? The foregoing warranties and commitments appear to be of little value.

This could affect the federal government. After all, he keeps rolling countless e-plans. Federal Councilor Alain Berset recently announced that he intends to advance the electronic health record. This is also very sensitive data.

The data theft fiasco is a major setback for such plans. The Bundesrat must now do everything it can to regain confidence. He has already promised a full explanation. Undiminished transparency must be the next step.

Because one thing is clear: an efficient state with attractive services must count on digitization. What citizens are used to in their private lives, they also expect from the state. And especially from him that he gets the careful handling of your data under control.
