“I thought that was completely wrong”: Daughter Anja washes SVP-Glarner’s cap

What’s it like having an SVP hardliner for a father? Anja Bächler (25) often hears this question. The municipal official is the daughter of the Aargau Reich Councilor Andreas Glarner (60). In a joint interview with the “Aargauer Zeitung” she tells what she thinks of her father’s politics.

Papa Glarner has been heavily criticized for shaming a Zurich teacher a few years ago for releasing Bayram to Muslim students at the Sacrifice Festival. Glarner posted the teacher’s cell phone number on Twitter and called on her to file a complaint. “I thought that was completely wrong,” says daughter Anja.

She doesn’t accept Glarner’s argument that it was the teacher’s cell phone. “I don’t think it’s okay that this woman is put in the spotlight like that. If you’re aiming at someone who isn’t involved in politics, I don’t think it’s okay.”

Glarner also received a public rebuke from his daughter for his reaction to the “Gender Day” in Stäfa ZH. The SVP National Council had shared a letter without obscuring the names and phone numbers of the school social workers. As a result, the event had to be canceled due to serious threats. “In this case, too, you should not have published the name,” says Anja Bächler. “You knew what triggered you when you spread it.”

Despite all this: daughter Anja says she is proud of her father. Although that has less to do with him as a politician than with him as a person. “He is a very generous person and has also set an example for us.” It impresses her how he stands up for his opinion and fights for it.

She herself can also imagine becoming politically active one day – but only at the municipal level. Because the possibilities of influence are much greater there. “I have the feeling that my father moved much more in the Oberwil-Lieli city council than later in Aarau or now in Bern.” (lha)
