Nearly 500 people died in Switzerland last year as a result of the heat. It was the second highest value since the turn of the millennium.

However, the negative record of 2003 was clearly missed, according to a report published Monday by the Federal Office for the Environment (FOEN). At that time, about 1,400 people died, almost three times as many as in 2022. One reason for this, according to Bafu, could be that there were fewer tropical nights on the northern side of the Alps in 2022 than in 2003.

consequences of climate change

A week ago, the University of Bern published a study on heat-related deaths. Due to methodological differences, the University of Bern calculated just over 600 heat deaths. Human-induced climate change is responsible for about 60 percent of these deaths, the university said.

According to the Bafu, 2022 was the warmest and sunniest year in Switzerland since measurements began in 1864. While the average temperature from 1991 to 2020 was 5.8 degrees, it rose to 7.4 degrees in 2022. (SDA)
