Fluorescent tubes are disappearing from the market. As of August 24, 2023, they will no longer be available to consumers. Switzerland thus adopts a European regulation. So-called T8 and T5 fluorescent tubes are affected by the import ban.
Most old tubes can be replaced with LED bulbs. They are more energy efficient, last longer and do not contain toxic substances such as mercury. Therefore they are more expensive. The old tubes only cost a few francs, while LED tubes cost between 20 and 30 francs.
The lamps do not need to be replaced immediately, but only when they break. The LED tubes usually also fit into the existing fixtures. “Then it is in fact minor maintenance under tenancy law,” says Norina Meyer of the Legal Advice observer. The costs of a new LED tube must be paid by tenants themselves.
In some cases, the entire lamp socket must be replaced. This requires a specialist. “Then the landlord must pay these conversion costs if the lamp belongs to the apartment, such as the lamp in a mirror cabinet,” says Meyer.
