But not “the normal Ueli”: Maurer is committed to the SVP sustainability initiative

Former Federal Councilor Ueli Maurer is fighting at the forefront of the SVP sustainability initiative.

When announcing his resignation to the Federal Council, Ueli Maurer, 72, said he was looking forward to finally being “normal Ueli” again. After so many years as a public figure, he wants to regain part of his identity.

Six months after leaving the state government, however, it is clear that the ‘normal Ueli’ has apparently remained a politician after years in politics as a member of parliament, party chairman and federal councilor. Because the Zurich politician is involved in the initiative committee of the SVP’s sustainability initiative, “20 minutes” reported.

“In the interest of Switzerland”

“Not 10 million Switzerland” is the slogan of the initiative. The SVP sees the harm in “uncontrolled immigration”. And she wants to use her initiative to slow them down and stop them if necessary.

Maurer does not personally comment on his efforts. However, the SVP said on his behalf: “It is in the interest of future generations that tools are created today to regulate immigration to Switzerland with clear principles.”

The former federal councilor thus gives the initiative extra weight. This in turn irritates the political opponent. Fabian Molina, National Councilor from Zurich (32), said about “20 minutes” that it was “disgusting” that Maurer “supported the SVP election campaign” “in the foreground”. Because it is “not usual” for old federal councilors to “meddle so aggressively in day-to-day politics so early on”.

No rules regarding the activities of former federal councilors

Zurich “Weltwoche” publisher and SVP national councilor Roger Köppel (58) reacted immediately. In his Internet program “Weltwoche daily” he said: “Let’s be glad that old federal councilors are not eunuchs.”

The political scientist Marc Bühlmann said in the “Tages-Anzeiger” that there are no rules about what former federal councilors can and cannot do. The professor at the University of Bern therefore thinks it is not unreasonable that former Federal Council members are politically active. (Okay)
