With one million francs, the Greens have received the largest donation in their history. The money came from Carmita Burkard Kroeber, an heiress of the founding family of the building materials group Sika. Green chairman Balthasar Glättli (51) announced this in an interview with “NZZ am Sonntag”.
Burkard Kroeber has been a member of the Greens for over 20 years. By announcing the donation at this time, she wants to indicate that “this is the crucial time to support the Greens,” says Glättli. The Greens generally disclose donations of CHF 10,000 or more.
With the million “we double our campaign budget”, said the party chairman. The party wants to use the money to fund an app. With this they want to stimulate the engagement of their members.
In addition, the app is intended to strengthen the referendum power of the party. It must also be possible to collect signatures more quickly after the autumn elections. In an interview with the “NZZ am Sonntag”, the politician made it clear: if the Greens do not get a seat in the Federal Council, they will increasingly resort to political blockades – ie referenda.
The party is keeping all options open for the Federal Council elections. “Strategically, we want to end the absolute majority of the FDP and SVP; a third seat for Red-Green.” But the left in Switzerland has two colors. “And this left would not be weakened if it had two seats in the Federal Council with two colors.”
