Only reality can deliver this: on the same weekend that the true scope of the data scandal became known to the federal government thanks to various media and persistent parliamentarians, Bundesbern held an open house.
On the occasion of the 175th anniversary of the federal constitution, the parliament building with its meeting rooms, where laws are usually discussed and decisions are taken behind closed doors under the protection of official secrecy, has been opened to the public. No trace of discretion, which is otherwise the case in politics.
Interested parties can view the masses of data from the federal police and customs, which the state should actually be hoarding in the deepest secrecy, via the Darknet without barriers. Unfortunately, at some point management decided to completely outsource the EDP in this delicate area to a private company. The rest is history: the hackers got away with it; Countless amounts of data are freely available online. The damage to the Berner Oberland Company is enormous.
After initial hesitation, the authorities went overzealous with investigations and investigations. In the beginning there is a small subcommittee of the GPK, which Fedpol boss Nicoletta della Valle had convened. Now the federal prosecutor’s office, the public prosecutor’s office of Bern and the crisis team that has been deployed are investigating all seven departments.
Investigations now show what really matters: security measures of the federal police can be downloaded down to the smallest detail, questions from Interpol to the Confederacy, threat levels, names and addresses of objects to be protected, credentials for computer systems of various federal offices. It all sounds like the plot of a comedy movie that could be called “Ernstfall in Bern” or “Accountant Nötzli at the Federal Police”.
The chairman of the said subcommittee, Alfred Heer, is already demanding personnel consequences. The question is whether it will ever come to that. Switzerland does not have a culture of resignation like Germany. When in doubt, it is better to protect each other. In an interview about the mafia, Fedpol boss della Valle said in 2021: “The Omertà also applies in Switzerland.” This punchline can only be provided by reality.
