On Saturday and Sunday with open doors: The Parliament building in Bern. (archive image)

A smartphone app has been developed for the event, enabling an official self-guided audio tour. The main attraction is the 300 meter long Bundeshaus with the parliament building.

Visitors can also take a look at the Bernerhof, the west wing of the Bundespaleis, which now houses the finance department of Federal Councilor Karin Keller-Sutter and was formerly a luxury hotel.

The Hotel Bellevue Palace is also open to the public. In the Salon Royal, among other things, the state banquets take place during state visits. During World War II and the Cold War, Bern developed into a center of international espionage with Bellevue at its center.

A dozen or so buildings are open to those interested. There are exhibitions, films and guided tours. The program also includes talks with politicians, including Federal Councilor Elisabeth Baume-Schneider.

To enter the symbolic building, all visitors over the age of 16 must present the official ID of the security personnel. Outside, the Federal Mile becomes an entertainment area. The SBB offers a ticket for 17.50 francs for travel from all over Switzerland.

On September 12, 1848, when the federal constitution came into effect, the confederation of states of the Old Confederation became a federal state, making it the first democracy in Europe since ancient times. The constitution was last revised in 1999.

Because the first federal constitution was created after a civil war (Sonderbundskrieg), they initially rejected the defeated Catholic-conservative estates. The first total revision took place in 1874 and essentially reconciled these circles with the liberal federal state.
