Maudet’s lawyer, Grégoire Mangeat, on Friday confirmed a similar report from the French-language Swiss radio and television RTS. The Correctional Board of Appeal and Review had sentenced the Council of State to a conditional fine of 300 daily rates of 400 francs. Maudet was also obliged to pay the State of Geneva compensation of 50,000 francs.

He was found guilty in federal court of accepting benefits in connection with a luxury trip to Abu Dhabi in 2015. At the time, the costs were borne entirely by the emirate’s royal family. Maudet was accompanied by his family, his then chief of staff and two businessmen from Geneva. The program also included a visit to a Formula 1 race.

The State Council had 30 days to appeal the verdict. He didn’t. The verdict is therefore final.

The trip also had political consequences for Maudet. After the administrative body had withdrawn almost all his files, he resigned, but at the same time he was also able to run for his successor again. With this candidacy for the State Council, however, he initially failed.

In the April general election, Maudet, who had been expelled from the FDP in the course of the affair, ran as the top candidate of a new party he had founded. With his election as a member of the State Council of Geneva, he made a surprising comeback.
