Hotel rooms for refugees from Ukraine: a report on status S recommends planning private accommodation (archive image)

The Federal Council first activated status S after Russia’s attack on Ukraine in March 2022. This allows refugees to be admitted without having to go through the regular asylum procedure.

According to a report published on Thursday by an evaluation group, status S has proven indispensable to relieve the burden on the asylum system. However, it is suggested to include status S and private accommodation in contingency planning.

In addition, the evaluation group recommends an explicit legal basis for integration measures. This is necessary, even though the status S is intended to ensure that the refugees return to their country.
