In March, an alliance of trade unions and SP launched a referendum against the reform of the pension fund with the slogan “Pay more – pay less”. The signatures have now been signed. (archive image)

The opponents of the reform of the pension fund passed by parliament have submitted the referendum. This means that the template 2024 is presented to the people.

According to the referendum leader, some 140,000 signatures have been collected. That is almost three times as many signatures as needed, reports the partnership of the Swiss Federation of Trade Unions (SGB), trade union umbrella Travailsuisse, trade union Unia, trade union VPOD and SP Switzerland. The Greens and the consumer magazine “K-Tipp” also support the referendum.

According to the alliance, the many signatures show that people have had enough of cutting pensions. For the referendum to take place and the people to vote, the alliance must collect 50,000 valid signatures before July 6.

‘Enormous additional costs for normal earners’

Alliance representatives argue that the amendment to the federal law on occupational pension schemes for old age, survivors and disability (BVG) passed by parliament will lead to pension losses and “enormous additional costs for normal earners”. Likewise, the significant reversal in interest rates and high inflation would be completely ignored.

The reform would also lead to a pension loss of more than 3,200 francs per year, the alliance further calculated. It would also further worsen the situation of women. The generation affected by the increase in the retirement age would have to pay even higher contributions and would receive a lower or at most the same pension.

the conversion rate drops

With the BVG reform, the federal councilors want to make occupational pensions future-proof. Due to the aging population, pension funds have recently had to spend more money to finance current pensions than previously saved by employers and employees.

The conversion rate for the pension calculation will be lowered from 6.8 to 6.0 percent. According to Parliament’s plans, part of a transitional generation will be compensated with a supplement to their pension. Those whose savings in the pension fund do not exceed a certain threshold are eligible. About half of the transition cohorts should benefit from this. (SDA)
