Switzerland already supports EU sanctions against Russia. But that is not entirely undisputed. Right-wing voices in particular fear Swiss neutrality. They advocate restraint in adopting EU sanctions against Russia.
Now the EU has included Switzerland in its list of partner countries in connection with the Russian sanctions. Brussels decided that on Friday.
According to the Federal Public Service for Economic Affairs, Education and Research (EAER), partner countries are those states that “apply a number of export control measures that are essentially equivalent to those of the EU”.
For the Federal Council, the EU’s decision is another sign of Switzerland’s good cooperation in the implementation of sanctions against Russia. Switzerland is determined “to continue this cooperation constructively and based on common values and goals”, confirmed the EAER.
According to Switzerland, the EU had offered to discuss Switzerland’s inclusion in the list of partner countries. The Federal Council has decided to accept the EU’s offer. (SDA/sq)
