In one area, EU citizens in our country have more rights than Swiss citizens: when it comes to family reunification. For example, where a German woman is allowed to bring her father from Turkey to Switzerland, someone with a Swiss passport does not have this right.

This disadvantage is now eliminated – thanks to Blick. Four years ago, Blick reported on national discrimination. SP alderman Angelo Barrile (46) then submitted a parliamentary initiative. If in the past Parliament hesitated to close the loophole, it was now ready to act. The National Council and the Council of States agreed with the proposal. And 19 cantons have also spoken out in favor of the change.

There is a concrete proposal on the table

The State Political Commission of the National Council has now adopted a concrete proposal to amend the Aliens Act. Swiss nationals should not be able to join only their spouses and minor children from third countries. But also, for example, the parents. The condition for this, however, is that they provide for themselves, that the latecomers have an apartment and that they integrate in Switzerland.

The current situation is against the constitution. The Federal Court ruled this more than a decade ago and called on Parliament to abolish the offensive inequality. But the bourgeois majority was against it.

Meanwhile, it is only a minority that wants to continue to discriminate against nationals. In the National Council, the SVP and some middle representatives – including middle president Gerhard Pfister 60) voted against the amendment. The SVP fears that this will open the floodgates. Instead of giving the Swiss more rights, those of EU citizens should be curtailed. That would mean renegotiating the free movement of persons agreement with the EU.
