Alain Berset puts an end to speculation. After twelve years on the Federal Council, he will retire at the end of the year. His track record is mixed.

The man from Freiburg has not really achieved much: his prestige project, the joint reform of AHV and pension funds, failed in the eyes of the people. Healthcare costs, the department’s second major construction site, continue to grow. Yes, Berset was able to push through cost-cutting measures – on drug prices and, in some cases, on doctor fees as well. But here, too, a liberating blow is missing.

You could say cynically: the only major legacy is that an SP union member has raised the retirement age for women to 65 years.

He handled Corona well

If it wasn’t for Corona. Even though Berset was dealt with as harshly as never before during the pandemic and even when there were wrong decisions and breakdowns: Overall, he weathered the crisis well. Always in the middle between lockdown and laissez-faire, Switzerland came through the pandemic relatively well.

And he was the compass the country needed. The popularity polls show this impressively. The populace even forgave him for his scandals and escapades (maybe his Italian charm helped).

You could cynically say: Thanks to Corona, Berset will be fondly remembered. Lucky for him.
