Corona burdened the healthcare system with almost 8 billion francs.

Corona burdened the healthcare system with almost 8 billion francs. Most of it comes from the Covid tests. According to one estimate, the cost in the cantons was between 2.3 and 2.9 billion francs. This is according to a new report from the Federal Council.

On Wednesday, he approved the final report on the financial impact of the pandemic. This summarizes two interim reports and now shows figures for 2022 and figures from the cantons.

Only 160 million francs for the army

Just over half of the $5 billion that the federal government had to pay consists of costs for covid testing and also for the purchase of vaccines and medical supplies. A small portion of CHF 160 million also went to the use of the military in health care.

According to the Federal Council, the costs in the cantons are an estimate. This is the conclusion of a study carried out by a research institute on behalf of the Federal Public Service of Public Health (BAG). According to this publication, the cantons spent just under half a billion francs on vaccinations. The capacity expansion in hospitals cost the cantons between 570 and 938 million francs in the years 2020 to 2022.

Premium increase in 2023 mainly due to pandemic

Just over half of the inpatient treatment of Covid 19 patients fell under the cantons. They paid about a billion francs in the years mentioned. The health insurance companies covered just under half of the costs – equivalent to less than a billion Swiss francs. There were also CHF 380 million for vaccination costs.

No figures are available on the costs of outpatient treatment. As the Federal Council writes in the communication, this is because “a clear distinction with other outpatient services was not possible”. The sharp increase in premiums for 2023 is mainly due to the pandemic. On the one hand due to the direct costs for the insurers mentioned and on the other hand due to subsequent interventions.

In April 2020, the Federal Council received a postulate from the Council of States to issue a report on the effects of the pandemic on healthcare costs.
