The National Council’s Climate Alliance in the Environment Commission has felt morning air. With the unequivocal yes to the climate protection law on Sunday, centre-left politicians are convinced that they can now take bigger steps in Switzerland’s energy conversion.

In any case, they are unwilling to compromise on the Energy Mantle Decree, which is intended to secure the country’s future power supply. For example, they insist on a solar obligation for all new buildings and buildings that are significantly renovated. The committee is thinking in particular of roof renovations. From 2030, large parking spaces, such as in shopping centers, must also be covered with solar panels.

Great potential without encroaching on nature

The Council of States had just rejected both. But exactly: from the point of view of the national energy politicians, that was before voting Sunday. According to the Environment Committee, the consistent expansion of renewable electricity production is a top priority. And she sees great potential for solar energy in building areas, which can be used without affecting the landscape or biodiversity.

The Commission agrees with the Council of States when it comes to the expansion of solar systems and wind farms in open space: in certain areas, which the cantons lay down in the structural plan after extensive consideration of interests, solar and wind energy must have priority over others interests, such as the protection of the environment.
