In May, 2045 people applied for asylum in Switzerland. That is almost 24 percent more than in April. Most came from Turkey and Afghanistan. In addition, 1,290 refugees from Ukraine were granted protection status S. This meant that 65,499 people in Switzerland had S status at the end of May.
In total, the federal government counted 9,793 asylum applications in the first five months of the year. This is the highest number in the past five years. The number of pending cases has increased accordingly, from 116 to 11,896.
The State Secretariat for Migration (SEM) processed 2,112 asylum applications last month. Of these, 464 people were granted asylum and 595 were provisionally admitted. 650 people were rejected. At the same time, in May, 1505 people left Switzerland under control or were repatriated to their country of origin or a third country.
The SEM rejected protection status S for 47 applicants. In 1014 cases it has withdrawn the status because the people had left the country. In total, protection status has ended in 12,220 cases since activation and the SEM monitors termination in 3,032 cases. (rba/SDA)
