If the situation in the asylum system eases and the cantons, municipalities and cities give the green light, the program should receive up to 1,600 particularly vulnerable refugees in 2024 and 2025. These are people who find themselves in a precarious situation in countries of first reception.
In the future, slightly fewer people will be admitted than under the current program, which is currently suspended due to heavily strained asylum structures. In 2022 and 2023, 980 people have so far found protection in Switzerland as part of the program.
The Council of States only voted against continuing the resettlement program on Thursday and adopted a motion from the ranks of the SVP. The day before, the National Council had rejected an identical motion.
