SVP celebrates success against “awakened language”: Schmerikon SG bans gender star

The 4,000-strong community of Schmerikon SG on Zurich-Obersee is up to date: both the authorities and the school use the gender star in their communication. Or better used: because the local party of the SVP has now put an end to this “gender madness”, it writes in a press release.

Noticing the widespread use of the gender star, the SVP – which also campaigned nationally against “woke madness” and “gender gaga” during the election year – turned to the city council demanding that gender stars and colons be avoided, writes local party leader Stefan Wäckerlin.

Adhere to federal and cantonal regulations

Reason: Neither the canton nor the federal government would have provided in their guidelines for the use of non-binary designations with gender stars and colons. Even the Council for German Spelling rejects the introduction of such gender-neutral designations in the middle of the word.

That was probably convincing: “Fortunately, the city council complied with this request,” continued Wäckerlin. He even put it on the website: The municipal council asks the employees of the municipality and the school to “observe the cantonal folder ‘Gender fair language – that’s how it works'”.

SVP monitors the execution

The folder offers the following options:

• Indication of both genders: teachers
• Word combinations: «teacher»
• Collective designations: «teaching staff»
• Substantiated adjectives and participles in the plural: «Lehrende»
• Relative clauses: “People who teach”

Teachers and staff adhere better to it. Because the SVP says that it will also remain vigilant in the future to ensure that the spelling of gender does not get stuck in the communication of the community. Because people are convinced “that the demand for an exaggeratedly gender-fair and arousing use of language aims to destabilize the free-democratic society.” (sf)
