Despite the Selensky boycott, many SVPs watched the speech

SVP seats remained empty as Ukrainian President Volodomir Zelensky addressed parliament on Thursday. There were two party members.

The entire SVP did not attend the speech of President Volodymyr Zelensky (45). The whole SVP? No! Like the inhabitants of a small Gallic village against the Romans, a duo of intransigent SVP members opposed their own faction: Bernese National Councilor Andreas Aebi (64) and Schaffhausen State Councilor Hannes Germann (66).

Aebi says he is the chairman of the OSCE parliamentary delegation. “When almost all members of parliament left the room last spring at an OSCE meeting in protest against a statement by the Russian delegate, I stayed. So I didn’t leave the room today.”

“I belong here!”

When asked why he was there, Germann said, “I belong here!” He sees this as an act of decency and respect for a head of state whose country is currently at war, whose people are dying and who is facing a humanitarian catastrophe.

He didn’t really understand why it wouldn’t be compatible with our neutrality to listen to someone. “But I respect it with everyone else if they take a different attitude here,” said the Council of States.

Wermuth had tears in his eyes

Central foreign politician and national councilor Elisabeth Schneider-Schneiter (59) was impressed by Volodymyr Zelensky’s speech. She thinks it is “right that he was given this platform”.

And SP co-chairman Cédric Wermuth (37) who is also moving. When the president reports on the kidnapped children, it brings tears to your eyes.

“The federal government has not done its homework”

“Zelensky clearly has a great deal of respect for Switzerland and its tradition,” he said in his speech in Ukrainian, which lasted about 15 minutes, before the National Councils and Councils of States.

At the end, the whole Parliament went out in applause. Meanwhile, besides the two righteous Aebi and Germann, hardly a SVP politician could be seen in the Federal Palace. Haven’t the other faction members heard about Selenski? “Yes, yes,” revealed an SVP MP. I watched the speech at a glance.” – They were interested anyway.
