That’s what Blick says about the SVP’s Selenski boycott: Listening wouldn’t have hurt

Ukrainian President Volodomir Zelensky addresses the Swiss parliament on Thursday. A quarter of the seats in the National Council Chamber remain empty: the SVP is boycotting the speech. She sees Swiss neutrality in danger.

This is humbug. There is no need for Selensky to talk about neutrality – ever since Russia attacked Ukraine, Switzerland has been struggling with its perception of being a neutral state. Listening to Zelensky wouldn’t have hurt. Even those who understand Putin in the German AfD have.

SVP cannot prevent Selenski’s speech

One point, however, must be conceded to the SVP: Parliament belongs to Parliament – and members of governments have no business there. Even theirs – the seven federal councilors – have no domestic authority, speaking only when they need to answer questions to parliament about laws or resignations.

And what if Putin had spoken?

But where was the outrage when Czech President Vaclav Havel, German Foreign Minister Hans-Dietrich Genscher, Italian President Oscar Luigi Scalfaro or British Princess Anne spoke before Parliament as the representative of the EU?

The question may be asked whether the SVP would also be on the move in state politics if not Zelensky, but Putin or Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban had spoken. Doubts about this are allowed.
