Now it’s solved. The Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (PUK) is complete. It is chaired by Isabelle Chassot (58), member of the Central Council of Freiburg. The discussion to the Speaker of Parliament was very short, say the President of the Council of States, Brigitte Häberli-Koller (64) and the President of the National Council, Martin Candinas (42). Franziska Ryser (31) was elected Vice President of the PUK, the St. Gallen Green National Council.
Seven members of the Council of States and seven of the National Council form the team investigating how it was possible that Credit Suisse had to be rescued from UBS with the help of the federal government.
In addition to Chassot and Ryser of the SVP, National Councilors Thomas Matter (57) and Alfred Heer (61) and State Councilor Werner Salzmann (60) will sit in the PUK. The SP sends State Councilor Roger Nordmann (50) and State Councilor Daniel Jositsch (58) into the race. The FDP expelled Andrea Caroni (43) and Philippe Bauer (61) and National Councilor Daniela Schneeberger (55) from the Stöckli.
For the middle bracket, State Council Heidi Z’graggen (57) and Landsraad Leo Müller (64) are allowed to enter the PUK. And the GLP has nominated Roland Fischer (58). With the Greens, alderman Maya Graf (61) stands next to Ryser.
It is necessary to find out what mistakes the CS has made. Whether and how the Netherlands Authority for the Financial Markets (Finma) acted. How the National Bank behaved, what role FDP Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutter (59) played and whether SVP predecessor Ueli Maurer (72) made mistakes.
Chassot’s election as PUK boss had become clear. Since Keller-Sutter is a member of the FDP and her predecessor Maurer is a member of the SVP, none of these factions came into question. The bourgeoisie in turn did not want a left-wing PUK boss. And the GLP with only one representation also had no chance. So only someone from the middle remained.
But there are doubts in parliament whether Chassot will lead the PUK to success. In the Council of States, she has so far held no strings attached. In the coming days, the committee will decide how it will work and the timetable. (dba)
