The evening before the women’s strike: left-wing extremists attack right-wing youths

Last night there was a clash between left-wing and right-wing extremists in Bern’s Münstergasse.

Shortly before 9 p.m. on Tuesday evening, a short, violent confrontation took place in the old town of Bern between left-wing autonomouss and far-right activists from Junge Tat.

The right-wing extremists say they were eating fondue in a restaurant – it was restaurant Harmonie – when chairs were suddenly thrown and a window broke. Left-wing extremists masked in balaclavas and helmets probably recognized Tobias L. and Manuel C., two prominent faces of the young Tat, through the window. They went for this one.

For propaganda video in the city

According to their own statements, right-wing activists Junge Tat and the francophone Swiss group Némésis were in Bern to make videos. Before the women’s strike, they wanted to draw attention to the fact that the best solution for women to feel safe in Switzerland is to close the borders.

They wanted to show what “migration and open borders have to do with the decrease in safety on Swiss roads,” says Tobias L. in a video on Twitter.

When they then went to the restaurant, left-wing extremists observed them and then attacked them. “About a dozen hooded men tried to hit us with chairs, stones and telescopic batons.”

Young Tat fought back

The members of the Junge Tag counterattacked: Tobias L. ran into the alley and also struck with a long stick. Pepper spray was also used. The collision lasted barely three minutes, then the hooded men ran away autonomously.

Guests sitting at the outdoor tables of restaurant “Lorenzini” across the street jumped, some of them startled, and fled into the restaurant.

Police officers arrived about fifteen minutes later. Bern cantonal police had no choice but to take testimonies – but only with “Harmony”. They did not ask the guests of the “Lorenzini” a few meters away for Blick information. They did register the considerable damage to property of the fondue restaurant. Two people were reported to have been slightly injured. A window and a door were also smashed.

Under the leadership of the Bern-Mittelland public prosecutor’s office, the Cantonal Police of Bern has launched an investigation into the events, in particular into those involved and backgrounds. She’s looking for witnesses.

The Junge Tat is a new right-wing movement from the identity spectrum. She is against immigration, Islam, but increasingly against the queer community and feminism. The group was suspected of attacking a Pride service a year ago. (sf)
