The decision is eagerly awaited. Because in the battle for the presidency of the Parliamentary Commission of Inquiry (PUK), which is to investigate the collapse of Credit Suisse, the center party is clearly in pole position. On Monday afternoon, the parliamentary faction let the cat out of the bag.
The two councilors Isabelle Chassot (58, FR) and Heidi Z’graggen (57, UR) and the Lucerne National Councilor Leo Müller (64) come to kiss their hands. Before that, the group carefully analyzed the candidates for their competences, their independence and their availability. State Councilor Daniel Fässler (62) had previously withdrawn from the race.
“The center has supported the establishment of a PUK from the very beginning and is ready to assume its responsibility,” emphasizes party chairman Philipp Matthias Bregy (44). As part of the PUK, the Center is committed to doing its utmost to provide an objective and comprehensive analysis of the causes and circumstances that led to Credit Suisse’s demise.
And: “All three candidates have the necessary skills to take over the presidency of the PUK”, emphasizes Bregy. The middle party also sees itself in the most promising position to take over the presidency.
For the SVP and FDP, the game is already up: a presidency of those two parties is ruled out due to the participation of their own federal councilors – former finance minister Ueli Maurer (72) and current finance minister Karin Keller-Sutter (59). And the middle-class majority in parliament will hardly begrudge the SP, GLP or the Greens the prestigious office.
This means that 9 of the 14 PUK seats, which are divided between the National Council and the Council of States, are now occupied. It is clear that the Vaud SP national councilor Roger Nordmann (50) is relinquishing the group chairmanship in order to take a seat in the committee. The Social Democrats have yet to determine the second seat.
The Greens rely on women: they send Councilor Maya Graf (61, BL) and National Councilor Franziska Ryser (31, SG) to the PUK. The FDP is supported by National Councilor Daniela Schneeberger (55, BL) and the two State Councilors Philippe Bauer (61, NE) and Andrea Caroni (43, AR).
The GLP decides on Tuesday. The two national councilors Martin Bäumle (ZH, 59) and Roland Fischer (LU, 58) are still in the race for a seat. The SVP will certainly not allocate the three seats to which it is entitled until tomorrow. The Bernese Council of States Werner Salzmann (60) should already be set up.
The offices of the National Council and the Council of States will determine on Wednesday who may actually chair the PUK. A commitment credit of five million Swiss francs is planned for the Commission of Inquiry. (dba)
