It was the middle of the night when 200 members of the National Council saw their cell phones lit up on their bedside tables. National Council President Martin Candinas (42) called on everyone by text message to vote in the National Council chamber. At witching hour?

Candinas can use a button on his desk to inform politicians when a vote is imminent. Then they can get to their desks punctually when they need to stretch their feet in the lobby or meet lobbyists at the Federal Palace. Thanks to SMS, they usually do not miss a voice.

Who was at Candina’s desk?

The politicians also received such a text message reminder on March 17 – but then at 2:53 in the morning. There was certainly no vote.

The solution to the riddle: someone else activated the signal for a vote from the presidential desk. This is confirmed by an employee of the Bundeshaus in comparison with Blick. The corresponding button can only be pressed there. To this day it is not known who is behind it.

But no more pay for parliamentarians

But they probably weren’t ghosts calling for voices in the middle of the night. That evening, a big event took place in the parliament building until late into the night. It is said that it was the birthday party of several Greens, but it started at 6 pm.

The invitation went to the entire parliament. Since the jubilees “spend a significant part of our daily lives with you”, politicians of all stripes were invited. Has anyone made a joke in this regard? When asked about the occasion and the misfortune, the Greens say only: No comment.

System is now locked

Parliament has since responded to the joke. Since then, the screen on the president’s desk has been systematically blocked at the end of the meeting. So that the politicians can no longer be awakened from their sleep if parliamentarians or other guests in the Federal Palace should go overboard again.

It was not the first time such a nightly message had been received, the parliamentarians said. However, there was no evidence of this in their texting history.
