Commentary on the women’s strike: Let’s stay angry, let’s stay boring

College girls only want a rich man; Women simply convince themselves that they are being discriminated against – and the patriarchy is just a phantom anyway.

Four years after the women’s strike in 2019, the mood has changed. The tenor today: This feminism is fine now.

The development is encouraged by conservative serialists. As laborious and exhausting as this backlash may be for many, this supposed countermovement is part of the process.

Because change always provokes resistance. The current setback is an expression of progress. Something is happening, the balance of power is shifting.

Over the past four years, progress has been visible and tangible everywhere: in federal Bern, paternity leave and marriage have passed for everyone; Progress is being made to better reconcile work and family life and to improve the position of women in the labor market. It was also made possible by the greater representation of women in Parliament.

But that’s not all. The revision of the criminal law for sexual offenses and the broad social debate about it have led to a reconsideration. We talk about sexual violence differently today than a few years ago, recognize abuse more quickly, are more sensitive and differentiated. But don’t fool yourself. Much remains to be done. The Rammstein debate will not be the last of its kind.

Markus Theunert, psychologist and CEO of men.ch, said in a recent interview that the main privilege of men is the illusion of not being privileged: “Men grow up with the certainty that they are the center of society, the yardstick. ”

It is therefore a huge provocation for many members of the supposedly stronger sex when they are asked to come to terms with the privileges they have enjoyed for thousands of years.

This core privilege is about to crumble quickly. Opinion formers, who have hitherto self-confidently and self-evidently propagated the prevailing social patterns of thought, are confronted with different worldviews and have to explain their own lack of reflection.

Thanks to women who are adamant and relentless that the work is not done yet. Thanks to women who provoke. But also thanks to men who feel challenged.

In that sense, let’s stay angry. Let’s stay annoying.
