The National Council is against: No aid package of 5 billion francs for Ukraine

The horror of the centre-left is great. “Now we have reached the nadir of solidarity and the pinnacle of egomania: While images of flooded places and bombed school buildings are ubiquitous, SVP, FDP and Mitte reject any increase in humanitarian aid for Ukraine. I am ashamed,” complains GLP Reich Councilor Beat Flach (58) on Twitter.

SP council member and co-party chairman Cédric Wermuth (37) twice later: “No blocking of commodity trade, no consistent setting of oligarch funds, no increase in aid. The slogans of solidarity from the centre-right are just empty words.”

A majority of SVP, FDP and Mitte on Thursday rejected a motion by 98 votes to 90 with 4 abstentions calling for support in Ukraine of five billion francs over the next five to 10 years. The motion for a welfare program is now off the table.

There are still many questions that need to be answered in advance

A narrow majority of the Foreign Policy Committee (APK-N) submitted the three-part motion. The Council rejected all three points. The money is to be used for humanitarian aid, civilian protection, demining and peacebuilding. The initiative required a legal basis for a support program.

However, a civilian minority of the APK-N believed that numerous issues related to the reconstruction of Ukraine and related international cooperation remained to be resolved.

Cassis also against hasty decisions

Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis (62) also did not want to talk about hasty amounts and programs. The Federal Council wants and will help with reconstruction in Ukraine, he assured. First of all, however, clarifications are needed about the necessity and financing of the aid.

In the Council of States, the green Mathias Zopfi (39) introduced a similar motion, which also calls for five billion francs for aid in Ukraine. Members of the five parties represented in the Council of States also signed. The small chamber is expected to discuss aid to Ukraine on Monday. (SDA/dba)
