But only under one condition: even SVP boss Chiesa wants a Gotthard tunnel toll

Citizens want tunnel money at the Gotthard. SVP chairman Marco Chiesa also wants a toll on the Alpine highway if Swiss drivers receive compensation elsewhere.

The Gotthard traffic jam is irritating the citizens of Uri. So much so that they are now demanding countermeasures from the Bundesrat. Central National Councilor Simon Stadler (35) is now bringing an old idea back to the table. In a motion he demands the introduction of a tunnel charge for north-south transit. The higher the demand, the higher the cost of using the Gotthard and San Bernardino tunnel. In concrete terms, this means that if you go to Ticino during Easter, you will pay more than in November.

The proposal drives SVP boss Marco Chiesa (48) against the wall. “The Swiss would also have to pay the fee and would be asked to pay several times,” Ticino’s Council of State complained. The local population has long funded transportation infrastructure. “For example, via motor vehicle tax, mineral oil tax or CO2taxes, they have long made their contribution.”

Chiesa wants compensation for Swiss

However, Chiesa is not completely closed to tolls. On Monday, he submitted a proposal proposing an “alpine highway toll”. This transit rate should apply to cars that want to go through the large tunnels on the Alpine highways.

The highlight: “The Alpine toll through these tunnels should not be discriminatory, but should ensure cost compensation for vehicles registered in Switzerland.” In other words, all users should pay the fee, but Swiss drivers should receive a fee – a kind of refund.

For example through motor vehicle tax or a reduction in other taxes. “The goal for Swiss users is cost neutrality. They should not be subjected to extra taxation!”, Chiesa makes clear.

Foreigners have to pay more

Foreign drivers, on the other hand, would have to pay more than today, because there is no possibility of compensation for them. “Today, foreigners pay only 40 francs for the motorway vignette,” says Chiesa. “With a toll, they would contribute more to the financing of our highways.”

According to the request, the additional funds obtained should also be used for “the maintenance and safety of the infrastructure and for the maintenance of the highways”.
