From Agreement to Action: Rebuilding Biodiversity

Celebrating World Biodiversity Day gives us the opportunity to think about the natural wealth that surrounds us and fundamental role that plays in our existence.

Biodiversity, which includes all forms of life in our planet is a priceless treasure It deserves our full attention and protection.

Latin America and the Caribbean ranks among the regions with the highest diversity of ecosystems in the world. Home: 12 of Earth’s 14 biomes; 190 terrestrial ecoregions; 96 freshwater ecoregions and 44 marine ecoregions.

The region also has a valuable cultural heritage the result of historical coexistence between human societies and nature, which has always maintained them.

Despite its obvious importance, biodiversity faces many challenges. Human activity, such as deforestation, pollutionclimate change and loss of natural habitats have caused the decline alarming in biodiversity.

The relationship between biodiversity and quality of life may be less obvious to the vast majority of people who live in cities and other urban centers and who do not gather food directly from nature. However, it seems wild animals are still the basis of our health and nutrition and the first line of defense against the consequences of climate change.

It is imperative that we take immediate action to preserve and restore biological diversity, since its loss would have serious consequences for our own well-being and ecosystem balance.

There are already important developments. The United Nations Conference on Biological Diversity (COP15) made in December past in canada, concluded by a historic agreement: the The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, which strives to lead global actions in favor of nature by 2030.

Among its goals, it intends to restore 30% of ecosystems, cut food waste by half, and invest at least $200,000 million a year in strategies that benefits of biodiversity. Also This year, the announcement of the so-called “Treaty on the High Seas”, which aims to guarantee the preservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity, preserving 30% of the world’s oceans in protected areas 2 , is encouraging.

But there is still a long way to go. We cannot afford indifference or procrastination. necessary actions. The future of our planet and future generations depend on our present decisions and commitments.

It is time for us all to take responsibility for the protection of biological diversity. Governments must strengthen environmental protection policies and regulationspromoting conservation and sustainable management of natural resources. Companies also have an important role to play perform, adopting responsible practices and looking for more sustainable alternatives in their business.

Furthermore, each of us can change our daily life. We can make conscious decisions, from eating organic and local products to reducing plastic consumption and supporting recycling initiatives. Small individual actions add up and can have a significant impact on biodiversity conservation.

Biodiversity, which includes all forms of life on our planet, is a priceless treasure that deserves our full attention and protection.
