Andalusia, Catalonia and Madrid account for half of the country’s theaters

Galicians who want to enjoy a movie shown in the cinema have at their disposal 167 of 3591 screens in Spain until May 1 of this year. The data is from the latest list of movie theaters, which was prepared by the Association for Communication Media Research (AIMC) and with which the two largest distributors in the sector in the country, 014 DS and Moviedis, collaborated. Of the 167 Galician screens, almost a third, 28.7% are in 3D format. And taken from the second percent, they are counted 62.1 screens per million inhabitants.

The vast majority of cinema screens in Spain are concentrated in three communities, which cover half the country: Andalucía, with 649; Catalonia, with 600, and Madrid, with 534. They are followed by 426 from the Community of Valencia, 199 from the Basque Country and 172 from Castilla y León, until they reach 167 from Galicia. At the bottom are Ceuta and Melilla with eight, La Rioja with 36 and Cantabria with 41.

Other data can be extracted from this list, such as the fact that cinemas in Spain have reached their maximum number in the last ten years. Despite the fact that the number of rooms and seats is slightly reduced, the number of halls is increasing, although the size of the rooms is larger, as well as the number of seats. According to the list, there are 750,751 cities. This means that the capacity and capacity of the rooms is slightly reduced.

But if you look at it from a population perspective, the number of Spaniards living in a municipality that has a cinema has also increased: two out of three. There are a total of 493 city councils that have cinemas, and compared to last year, their number increased by 14, and if we take 2016 by 56. Of course, 68.4% of rooms are located in a population of more than 50,000 inhabitants. The public is also responding with a slight increase, as viewers rebounded by 96% before the pandemic.
