Left chatter, right law

Ursula von Arx writes that the SVP is using the methods of the US Right. Trichler freedom demonstration in Zurich Oerlikon against transvestite children’s lecture.

Okay, Migros took a candy with a racist name off the shelf. But the manufacturer still offers them on the Internet. Winnetou’s book was removed from the program by the publisher. Another offers one with the same name. Much has been said about both cases. Cancel Culture! Almost nothing happened.

What the left can do, the right can do much better. Because while the left is debating various forms of “cultural appropriation” and “structural everyday racism” in endless loops of differentiation and debating whether it’s really “verbal harassment” when someone asks for a second date after being rejected, the right create facts.

They do it in Poland, Hungary and, of course, the USA. They mobilize state power and pass repeal laws that can have serious consequences for those affected: anti-abortion laws, anti-LGBTQ laws, censorship laws.

The anti-abortion law in Ohio, USA, meant that a 10-year-old girl had to go to neighboring Indiana after she was raped for an abortion. The doctor who helped the girl faced a bullshit storm from organized anti-abortion groups, and the Attorney General of Indiana investigated her case.

In the state of Mississippi, 31 bills were introduced earlier this year to restrict the freedoms of people who are not heterosexual.

Authorities in Florida are investigating Jenna Barbie, a teacher who showed her fifth graders a Disney movie with a gay character. Because she probably violated the “Don’t Say Gay” law (“Don’t say gay!”).

In Tennessee, drag queens are not allowed to perform in public or in front of children and youth.

And the methods used by the right in the US to collect votes are imported into Switzerland by the SVP. National Council member Andreas Glarner attracted a lot of attention with his hate posts against the so-called gender day at Stäfa and against “Drag Story Time”, a reading lesson for children in the Pestalozzi library in Zurich, also because he was together with right-wing extremists.

Left talk, right law. Everything will be fine

Ursula von Arx is annoyed that she is sometimes more annoyed by the obsessions of the left than by the attacks of the minority right. Von Arx writes to Bleek every second Monday.
