Tax Mathematics at the Federal Council

In the fall, people voted for income tax reform. Supporters raved about the 900 billion Swiss francs that would go to Switzerland after the yes. Supporting documents? nobody.

The Federal Council left the fantasy number in the room – and added another one. “Over the past twelve years, 60 percent of the volume of bonds has already migrated abroad,” senior vice president of finance Ueli Maurer said to caution against a rejection.

The finance department never explained how these huge numbers came about. They were selected by experts. The people rejected the reform.

In 2023, the new FDP Finance Minister Karin Keller-Sutter will campaign for the adoption of the OECD minimum tax. Hardly anyone questions the tax itself. The distribution of additional income is controversial.

Keller-Sutter argues that all cantons will benefit from the reform through financial equalization. But what exactly does this mean? Unlike her predecessor, Keller-Sutter doesn’t give wrong numbers—she doesn’t give them at all. Calculated by the weekly newspaper “Woz”. Result: corporate cantons profit, the rest look down the drain. The reform brings the canton of Zug 1,625 francs per person per year compared to 1,337 in Basel-Stadt, on the other hand, more than 20 cantons receive less than 200 francs per person.

What does the finance department say about these numbers? Nothing.

Wrong numbers, no numbers – maybe the Federal Council will try to make it transparent for a change. The voter is grateful.
