Right Left

Oh yes, there is much to report and think about as we look back on May 1, 2023. For example, about the balance of the Zurich police: 19 arrests for disorderly conduct and damage to property. Or about the events in Basel: Chaos with pyrotechnics against the police. Or about the march in Bern: Participants of the unannounced, i.e. illegal, revealing stage chaos.

Pictures from all three cities ruled or inspired by the left-greens also show violence – to the delight of the rioters, to the horror of the townspeople.

Is it any wonder that young socialists condemn “police violence on May Day” in the strongest possible terms? In fact, this should come as a surprise as the perpetrators turn into victims. But this, in turn, is not surprising: the logic of Yuso, or, in a nutshell: “The pack fights, the pack gets along.”

But what is surprising is the reaction of the people’s councilor from the Social Democrats, Tamara Funicello, who does not want to say anything about the riots: “I want to talk about what is important to us.”

As a member of the Federal Assembly, Tamara Funicello made the following promise: “I undertake to uphold the constitution and the laws and faithfully perform my official duties.”

Not less!

Unfortunately, the obligation for Funicello is now somewhat smaller, that is, no longer unlimited, but – politically relativized – only “what is important to us”. Enforcing the law is not one of the important things for the former president of Juso. At least not in every case.

Imagine the mental turmoil of a leftist national councilor if instead of leftist rebels the streets of Zurich, Basel and Bern were roamed by rightist rebels, such as the youth of the SVP, or even extreme rightists.

But there would be something! Funicello’s outrage. Immediate counter protests; vigils of churches and NGOs, which are one and the same; Requires a ban on right-wing demos in general; subscription campaigns of the left-green intellectual patriarchs; Mobilization of journalistic activists in the press, on television and radio.

In other words, everything that is required after crossing the border, as in the case of May 1, but, unfortunately, unfortunately, is only possible if right-wing outcasts can be blamed for violations of the law.

Constitution and law – it depends.

Yes, that’s how links work today. How was it yesterday?

The labor movement considered itself a right-wing movement. That’s why it broke away from left-wing extremism and developed a social democratic culture of freedom, backed by – yes, a constitution and law.
May 1 has become a worthy secular holiday, an expression of the desire for a free and just society – civilization for all.

It would be useful not only to focus this great story on the Swiss general strike of 1918 and Comrade Robert Grimm, but also to expand it to include the great European struggle for democracy. This would make it clear to those who downplay the violence of the left extremists that the collapse of the Weimar Republic, that is, the triumph of the Nazis in 1933 and its horrific consequences for the world, would hardly have happened without the extremists of the left” – the communists. ‘ is hostile to democracy.

Then the icon of the left Spartacists, Rosa Luxemburg, would suddenly appear in a different light: as a fighter for the Soviet republic – a fabulous creature that turned out to be a bloody nightmare under the rule of the Russian “soviets”.

Like totalitarianism with millions and millions of victims.

On the other hand, on the side of the Social Democrats, Otto Wels is a shining example in the darkest hour. On March 23, 1933, the Reichstag member and SPD chairman delivered his most daring speech against Hitler’s total rule through the Enabling Law. His immortal phrase: “Freedom and life can be taken away from us, but not honor.

Not a single centre-right MP followed him or voted against him. The 94 Social Democrats were the only ones in the Reichstag who opposed the seizure of power by Hitler. The complicity of the Communists with the Nazis preceded their isolation. They systematically denounced the Social Democrats as “Social Fascists” and refused to fight together for the first German democracy.

What does this past have to do with May 1, 2023 in Switzerland?

Our present is characterized by war and dictatorship. Again they are fighting against Western values, and all this rhymes with freedom. Among these values is social security, so dear to the Left.

So if you can’t think of anything to say about the systematic violations of the law on May 1, 2023, you are committing a betrayal of social democratic history, which is especially unfortunate in the case of Tamara Funicello, the daughter of a factory. worker and employee. Raised in Sardinia, she worked in a warehouse, office and service industry, she was also familiar with simple jobs and the top-down green-left attitude must have disgusted her.

How much left left left?

This question can be answered with a running formula: “cultural appropriation”, which – morally reprehensible from the point of view of comrades – means the sliding of the “old white man” into foreign identities, for example, “indigenous people”.

In this light, the left has simply appropriated the identity of the labor movement. In fact, she is not on the left.

She is right.
